Generate a PDF from Formidable Forms Using PDF.co and Zapier

4 Minutes Read

This tutorial shows how to fill a PDF template automatically whenever someone submits a Formidable Forms form.

Prerequisites

You will need:

  • A Formidable Forms form connected to Zapier
  • A PDF.co account
  • A fillable PDF template
  • The exact names of the fields in the PDF

You can use the PDF.co PDF Inspector to identify the form field names in your template.

Step 1: Create the Zapier Trigger

  1. Create a new Zap.
  2. Select Formidable Forms as the trigger app.
  3. Choose New Entry as the trigger event.
  4. Connect your Formidable Forms account.
  5. Select the form that will provide the PDF data.
  6. Test the trigger and load a recent submission.

Confirm that the test data includes every value you want to place in the PDF.

Step 2: Add PDF.co

  1. Add another step to the Zap.
  2. Select PDF.co as the app.
  3. Choose PDF Filler as the action.
  4. Sign in and authorize your PDF.co account.

Step 3: Configure PDF Filler

Configure the action as follows:

  • Source File URL: Enter the publicly accessible URL of your fillable PDF template.
  • File Name: Enter a name for the generated file, such as completed-form.pdf.
  • Fillable Form Fields: Add one item for each field you want to complete.

For every fillable field:

  1. Enter the exact PDF field name.
  2. Map the corresponding value from the Formidable Forms submission.
  3. Enter the page containing the field if required.

For example:

PDF field: Formidable Forms value

  • customer_name: Name
  • customer_email: Email
  • company_name: Company
  • request_details: Message

The field names must match the names embedded in the PDF template. The visible label printed beside a field is not necessarily its internal field name.

Step 4: Test the PDF

Test the PDF.co action. A successful result includes a URL for the completed PDF.

Open the URL and verify that:

  • Each value appears in the correct field.
  • Checkbox and selection values are handled correctly.
  • Longer responses fit within their fields.
  • The output filename is correct.

Step 5: Save or Deliver the PDF

PDF.co output URLs are temporary. Add another Zapier action to store or deliver the finished document, such as:

  • Uploading it to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive
  • Attaching it to an email
  • Saving it to a document-management system

Map the PDF.co output URL into the file field of the selected destination action.

Step 6: Publish the Zap

Submit another Formidable Forms entry and verify the complete workflow. Once the resulting PDF is generated and stored correctly, publish the Zap.

Each new form submission will now populate the PDF template automatically.

In this tutorial, you learned how to generate PDF based on the Formidable Forms using PDF.co and Zapier. You also learned how to use the PDF Inspector to fill out the fillable fields.
